About a year ago, my husband and I bought a boat, and over the course of this past summer, I’ve learned a lot about boating. A boat in the water isn’t designed to stay put. Unless tethered to something stationary, a boat will drift and bob and float away. Even on the calmest day, once you shut off the motor on your boat, you no longer control where the boat will go. The wind, the waves and the current will decide. A boat untethered is bound for destruction.
A soul untethered is bound there too.
Like an unmoored boat, a soul adrift is at the mercy of all the ugliness and peril the world throws at it. Anger, fear, discouragement, guilt, jealousy, discord and despair are all signs of a soul that has no anchor.
In our study in Hebrews this week, we learned that God has given us a better promise than the one He gave to Abraham. He’s given us the promise of His Son whose blood has bought our righteousness. Our hope in Christ serves as the anchor our souls need. It tethers us to the rock of our salvation. When the winds of change blow into our lives, when the waves of adversity threaten to capsize our boat, when the currents of temptation try to set us adrift, our trust in Christ holds us fast.
Are you feeling untethered these days? Hold tight to God’s BETTER PROMISE:
God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
