Worth a Thousand Hallelujahs

I’d like to end our Summer Rain series back where we started—with worship. We’re a people created for worship. As the Westminster Catechism states: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.”

Trouble is, we so often choose to turn our worship to the wrong things—athletes, musicians, sports teams, our bodies, our money, our talents, our children . . . well, the list is endless. In short, we waste our worship on gods we have created rather than on the One who created us.

But when we turn our worship to God—the only being truly worthy of our praise—we bring things back into the right perspective. Ruth Meyers in her book, 31 Days of Praise, explains it this way:

 “God does not enjoy our praise because He’s conceited and loves the limelight. He enjoys it because praise is an indispensable part of relating to Him, the Creator and Supreme Ruler who is exalted high above all. God is holy and infinite and all powerful, and you and I are specks in a vast universe, who receive from Him life and breath and all things. So worship, praise and thanksgiving bring needed realism into our fellowship with Him.”

Will you spend a few minutes with me in worship today? Read through the following psalm (several times if you need to) then click on the link below to watch a video of one of my new favorite songs. I hope the words, music and visuals will remind us all once again of the awesome, magnificent, utterly different and HOLY God we serve.

 Psalm 96 (MSG)

Sing God a brand-new song! Earth and everyone in it, sing!
Sing to God—worship God!
Shout the news of his victory from sea to sea,
Take the news of his glory to the lost,
News of his wonders to one and all!
For God is great, and worth a thousand Hallelujahs.
His terrible beauty makes the gods look cheap;
Pagan gods are mere tatters and rags.
God made the heavens—
Royal splendor radiates from him,
A powerful beauty sets him apart.
Bravo, God, Bravo!
Everyone join in the great shout: Encore!
In awe before the beauty, in awe before the might.
Bring gifts and celebrate,
Bow before the beauty of God,
Then to your knees—everyone worship!

Get out the message—God Rules!
He put the world on a firm foundation;
He treats everyone fair and square.

Let’s hear it from Sky,
With Earth joining in,
And a huge round of applause from Sea.

Let Wilderness turn cartwheels,
Animals, come dance,
Put every tree of the forest in the choir—

An extravaganza before God as he comes,
As he comes to set everything right on earth,
Set everything right, treat everyone fair.
