I am a fan of the apostle Paul for many reasons but one of the main reasons is the humble way he lived his life and served the church. Because of the power of his words, it’s easy to imagine him different than he was. From things I have read, I believe he was physically unimpressive. AND he wasn’t much of a speaker either. This verse from 1 Corinthians is a perfect example of that:
“My message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.”
I love this because it is the recognition that the messenger is nothing – only the message. And the message is so awesome when the Spirit is driving it, there is no need to try to “spruce it up” or make it more clever or persuasive. The words of scripture are literally “alive” and for sure they don’t need the speaker’s help to make them MORE alive.
Beth Moore says this about digging through the treasures available to us in his Word:
“Buried treasures are planted right there in the soil of your path where you can seek them and find them. Treasures set for discovery on a holy timer to be a word in due season. Nothing on earth is like divine revelation. Nothing compares to the Holy Spirit quickening His own words.”
I love the book of Jeremiah and am spending some extended time in this book right now. Jeremiah is a book of judgement but also a book of indescribable beauty.
Jeremiah 15:16 says:
“When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name.”
Take a moment to read through some of Jeremiah’s words with me. Some of these passages tell us something about who God is, some of them tell us something about who we are or how God sees us, and some are words of warning. As you read these words ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you personally – to bring to life certain phrases or words.
This is what the Lord says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, “No, that’s not the road we want!’”Jeremiah 6:16
Lord, there is no one like you! For you are great, and your name is full of power. Who would not fear you, O King of nations? That title belongs to you alone! Among all the wise people of the earth and in all the kingdoms of the world, there is no one like you.Jeremiah 10:6-7
Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love, I have drawn you to myself.”Jeremiah 31:3
I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.Jeremiah 31:33
Idols are worthless, they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people, his own special possession. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name!Jeremiah 51:18-19
But we worship at your throne – eternal, high, and glorious! O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who turn away from you will be disgraced. They will be buried in the dust of the earth, For they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water. O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed. If you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone.Jeremiah 17:12-14
They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one purpose to worship me forever, For their own good and for the good of all their descendants. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them. I will never stop doing good for them. I will put a desire in their hearts to worship me, And they will never leave me. I will find joy doing good for them and will faithfully And wholeheartedly replant them in this land.Jeremiah 32:38-41
Amen and Amen.
