Kernels

In John 12, Jesus creates a word picture to display the work of death to sin in the life of a believer. A solitary, dry kernel lies dormant until it’s planted into the soil where it can germinate and grow. It will need warmth, nourishment and water to begin to take root and sprout. Soon, sunlight will be its energy too.

How much like the transforming life of faith!

Alone we are dry and dormant but put in the right environment for growth, we take root and sprout into something that will produce even more.

What’s in the soil around you right now? Are you in a place that will provide the nutrients you need to grow? It might help you to know that plants need a good dose of manure to flourish. So, take heart if all around you appears crappy at the moment.

As the Light of Christ shines into your days,

the water of the Word soaks into your rhythms,

they react with the soil to help energize your faith.

“unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. ”

John 12:24
