Join our Summer Study

Do you ever wish you could know God? Really know Him? Do you try reading scripture and come away more confused, more empty than before? Have you tried time and again to establish a daily rhythm of intimacy with Christ only to fail? Next week we will be starting a summer class here on the blog taken from Claudine Lehman’s Personal Worship. If you answered “yes” to any or all of the above questions, I hope you will join us.

I’m so excited to be able to immerse myself this summer in the notes from Claudine’s Personal Worship class. I first took this class from Claudine when I was a brand-new mother in MUMs almost twenty years ago. The principles I learned back then on developing a deep, personal and daily relationship with Christ have had a lasting impact on all my other relationships since then, because it is the strength of that ONE relationship that is key to all the rest.

For those of you who do not know Claudine, let me introduce you. As a former pastor’s wife, she and her husband Curt helped start churches in Wyoming and western Nebraska before coming to Lincoln in 1962. Along with several other families, they then started the ministry we know today as Lincoln Berean Church. Claudine was also a founding member of our Tuesday Morning ministry and has served as Directional Team Leader, teacher and, most recently, prayer group leader, over the two decades of the ministry’s existence.

Like most of us women she has held many titles over the years including wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter, friend . . . but probably the one title she values the most is passionate follower of Christ.

Over coffee a few months ago, she asked a group of us this question. “What does it mean to grow in faith?” She then shared the following quote:

“Growth in faith means realizing that there is a lot I don’t know and probably a lot that I don’t have right.  This keeps me from being dogmatic about issues . . . remembering times in the past when I thought I had it all perfect only to discover that it wasn’t complete or correct as I thought or imagined.  So I keep asking God, thinking on this Word, believing even if I don’t understand it all . . . growing from one thought to the next.”

That quote not only sparked a great discussion, it also spoke volumes about the woman who shared it.

After more than seven decades of actively following Christ, Claudine could easily have an attitude of having seen and learned it all. I believe the lessons she learned years ago—the ones that initiated her pursuit of a deep, intimate relationship with God—are what keep her growing and learning today.

I want to be like that, don’t you? So I hope you will join us here for our summer study.

Each Thursday, we will share a short lesson. There will be a homework assignment and an opportunity to interact with others (if you’d like) in the comment section of the blog. The beauty of taking an online class like this is you can read the lesson at any time.
